35 Years... and still seeing the need

We are at a pivotal moment –whether delivering mega projects like HS2 or starting a tiny school in Africa after a civil war. It is important that we and our teams are operating at our maximum potential –there is so much to do. Our planet is suffering as we waste valuable resources and the public need us to succeed.
I believe that engineering will provide the answers and it is down to us (the Project Management Community) to make them happen –rapidly, on time and within budget. NO EXCUSES.
But we are simply not there yet…after 35 years working in various sectors, it is stark that we all seem to be experiencing similar issues…and they are not going away. So where have we been going wrong?
Fundamentally it feels as though we have been looking for technological solutions rather than addressing the people issues. We may simply not have invested in the development of professional project controls teams and are having to 'relearn' on every new project.
We can fix this if we pool our knowledge, use a standard approach and keep things simple. It is time for standardised roles, competence frameworks and self assessment / development - this will help us to accelerate the learning for a new generation of tech-savvy project controls teams.
